Because teleprompters aren’t allowed to win…

…that’s why!!  :D

In all seriousness though, what exactly is the Norwegian Nobel Committee playing at here?  Pres. Obama hasn’t really done much of anything yet, he’s only been in office for the last 10 months!  He’s planning to do a lot of things, laying lots of ground work for important issues in our country, he’s flown a lot of places and given LOTS of speeches…but what exactly has he done to deserve this award?!?

Well, nothing short of exhibiting “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

Obviously this award is not based on Pres. Obama’s past 10 months as it is supposed to be given in recognition for discoveries and achievements made during the preceding year and we all know what he was doing during 2008…campaigning.

So why the award then?  For changing the world’s perception of the United States simply by being elected?  Yes, former Pres. Bush started his administration with a lot of positive perception capital that was completely used up by the time he left office.  Yes, Pres. Obama certainly knows the ins and outs of inspiring the masses, much like former President John F. Kennedy.  No denying that…but is this a reason to grant such an award?

Shouldn’t the award  go to someone who has actually done something extraordinary, like Irena Sendler who was up for the prize in 2007? Seems that smuggling over 2,500 children out of Nazi occupied Warsaw is of little consequence to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.  Humanitarian efforts?! *Pbthhh!* Al Gore and the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won it instead.

All hell broke loose in the blogosphere when word got out yesterday…even Twitter couldn’t handle the news and crashed.  But does any of this have anything to do with the President himself?  After all, he didn’t ask for any of this and it seems to me, from his own statement, he may very well be a bit embarrassed by the undeserved attention.

“To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who won in the past,” Obama said at the White House. “I will accept this award as a call to action, a call to all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.”

I think Republican strategist Ed Rollins said it best when he told CNN:

“I think this may be way too preliminary.  At the end of four years, maybe he has accomplished something and deserves it,” he added. “I think it has diminished the award itself. I think certainly you have to give him an “A” for trying, but at the end of the day, what has he accomplished? Who on the world stage are his allies at this point in time?”

To President Obama I say congratulations for the win, most sincerely. As Senetor McCaskill so beautifully stated:  “Congratulations Mr. President for standing up to the scorn and derision of your opponents in the election when you firmly stood for the proposition that strength meant being willing to talk to your enemies, not just your allies. Thank you for the confidence and wisdom to say that a hand will be extended when their fist is unclenched. And thank you for understanding that our national security rests on our principles, the example we set for the world, and our alliances along with the excellence and strength of our military, rather than exclusively the latter.”

To the Norwegian Nobel Committee, pull your heads out of your collective asses just long enough to understand the historical value of your own award.  Really?  Al Gore over Irena Sendler?  Pres. Obama over Hu Jia, Sima Simar, Piedad Cordoba, , Wei Jingsheng, Greg Mortenson, Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad?  Seriously?  You look like a bunch of butt-kissing brown-nosers who are completely out of touch with reality, and btw, stop using our political figures to advance your own agendas! >:(

ETA: In case you think everyone in Europe is jubilant over this announcement.: “Obama’s won the Nobel Peace – WTF?!” (it’s a very short blog post…the comment section though is worth a decent scan through)
